這首聖詩由聖托馬斯·阿奎那（1225–1274年）為基督聖體節所作，被譽為阿奎那最優美的聖詩，同時也是教會七大聖詩之一。
據傳，《聖身奧妙歌》（Pange Lingua）的韻律源自羅馬凱撒軍團的行軍歌：「看哪，征服高盧的凱撒如今凱旋而歸」（Ecce, Caesar nunc triumphat qui subegit Gallias）。
除了基督聖體日，此詩亦於設立聖餐日使用。最後兩節構成了《皇皇聖體》（Tantum Ergo，即「我眾向主虔誠叩拜」），專門用於聖體降福禮儀中。
