據傳,《聖身奧妙歌》(Pange Lingua)的韻律源自羅馬凱撒軍團的行軍歌:「看哪,征服高盧的凱撒如今凱旋而歸」(Ecce, Caesar nunc triumphat qui subegit Gallias)。
除了基督聖體日,此詩亦於設立聖餐日使用。最後兩節構成了《皇皇聖體》(Tantum Ergo,即「我眾向主虔誠叩拜」),專門用於聖體降福禮儀中。
