拜羅姆的原稿現存於曼徹斯特的 切塔姆圖書館（Chetham's Library）。原稿題作 Christmas Day. For Dolly；「Dolly」指他的女兒 Dorothy。手稿的確切年代不能完全確定，館方暫定約為 1749年。到了1750年聖誕節，拜羅姆自己的日記已記載，由韋恩賴特帶領的歌者來到他家演唱這首詩，可見它當時已經開始流傳。
原作比今日聖詩形式更長；後來經歷刪節、重排和文字修改，才形成今日通常所見的六節、每節六行形式。所以《The Hymnal 1940》很準確地在作者年份後標上： 1749, alt. 也就是「約1749年作，經修改」。
約翰・拜羅姆（John Byrom，1692–1763）是英國曼徹斯特人，曾就讀劍橋大學三一學院，取得文學碩士學位，並曾赴蒙彼利埃學習醫學。他後來沒有以醫業為主要職業，而以自己創立的速記法授課；1724年獲選為英國皇家學會會員。他本人並不是職業聖詩作者，許多詩歌原本主要為私人或家庭場合而寫。
劉廷芳（Timothy T'ingfang Lew）是二十世紀中國重要的基督教教育家、神學家及聖詩工作者，也是1936年《普天頌讚》編纂工作的主要人物之一。1932年起，他主持聯合編纂中文聖詩集的委員會，最終形成1936年的《普天頌讚》。
楊蔭瀏（Yinliu Yang，1899–1984）則是中國近現代重要音樂學家，同時參與《普天頌讚》編纂。他一生涉及聖詩翻譯、作曲、編曲和中國音樂史研究；後來尤其以中國古代音樂史研究著稱。
YORKSHIRE 又稱 STOCKPORT，作曲者是約翰・韋恩賴特（John Wainwright，1723–1768）。《The Hymnal 1940》將曲調年代標為 1750年。這首曲調和拜羅姆的歌詞關係非常早。資料記載，1750年聖誕節，韋恩賴特親自帶領歌者到拜羅姆家演唱〈Christians, Awake〉；後來旋律刊入十八世紀的曲集中，逐漸以 YORKSHIRE 或 STOCKPORT 之名廣泛流傳。
