這首聖詩由普瓦捷主教維南提烏斯·福圖納圖斯（Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609年）所作，自中世紀早期以來，一直都是聖母敬禮之中一首非常重要的聖詩。此首聖詩用於《聖母小日課》之中夜課經；在羅馬教會《每日誦禱》（Liturgy of the Hours）用於「聖母慶節通用」之中的誦讀日課的聖詩。
